Technics 1200’s
In 1979, Panasonic released the Technics 1200 MKII. It was the first turntable to feature functions that specifically catered to DJs. Due to its high-torque direct drive mechanism and heavy-duty, vibration absorbing cabinet, it became the industry standard for DJ turntables over the past 50 years. At Common Beat, we specialize in repairing Technics 1200’s! Starting at $125 per turntable, our standard service includes everything they need to function as new!
Standard Service
Every standard service includes a new set of RCA cables. Technics 1200’s were equipped with a particular sized RCA cable in order to fit through the strain relief properly (see below). We tested many different brands to find the proper balance of quality and gauge. The navy blue cables that we use are durable and guaranteed to last. We also offer the option of internal grounding. This eliminates the need for a ground wire by sending the ground signal through the RCA cables.
Before
After
Our next step is cleaning and calibrating the pitch fader. We use electronics cleaner to combat any oxidation and debris on the inner carbon tracks. If faders need a more in depth cleaning, we are able to open them up to service the insides or replace them for additional costs.
We also reset the pitch fader to its factory setting.
Another upgrade included in our standard service is replacing the incandescent bulb target light with a much brighter and longer lasting LED. We are also able to replace the strobe light LEDs, speed select LEDs, and quartz lock LED for an additional cost. Contact us about custom colors!
Next we lubricate and reset the tonearm bearings to ensure they are seated properly. This keeps the tonearm level and moving freely for smooth playback with minimal skipping potential. We are able to replace bent or broken tonearms for an additional cost.
There are two internal adjustments that we calibrate to the factory settings. The pitch gain, which controls the range of the pitch fader, and the braking, which affects how quickly the turntable stops spinning.
The final step in our standard service is cleaning the turntable, specifically the head shell pins that connect to the phono cartridge. This ensures a solid connection and minimizes signal dropouts. We do not do any cosmetic or refinishing work on Technics 1200’s outside of this basic cleaning.
